Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise
A recent study suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"People buying such medications must be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting weight in about a year and a half.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
In conclusion, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural management.
