Tetris Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This
Each time a significant awards ceremony draws close, one notices a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types successfully include many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to put them. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games competing to become highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
